NBC Renews Olympics Deal

07 Jun

While many people thought Disney/ABC/ESPN, et all were the front-runners to pick up the Olympics from NBC, that turned out not to be the case.  NBC has secured the rights for the 2014 & 2018 Winter and 2016 & 2020 Summer Olympic games.  NBC’s current deal runs them through the 2012 Summer Games in London.

NBC has also confirmed that they will commit to showing all events live either on TV or online.  I assume NBC will also use their affiliates (like they have the last few Olympics) to also assist in live broadcasts of events.

As screwy as NBC has been with their broadcast TV over the last several years, this is the one thing they do amazingly well year after year.  I love their coverage of the Olympics so I am thrilled they will continue through 2020.

One response to “NBC Renews Olympics Deal

My cynicism of all that is the Olympic Committee led me to no other conclusion NBC would be retained. I think while the other bidders put on a brave face they knew the deck was stacked…the idea of having to bid for two games but being “allowed” to bid for others just creates the creative ambiguity needed to ultimately award the games under whatever criteria you choose. They have it designed that way for a reason. I have no problem with NBC retaining the rights as long as ALL events are live somewhere on cable or TV. Being live online is not good enough for me. We shall see – if they want to rerun events at night in their edited, crafted format that’s fine as long as I can seek out the events live elsewhere without waiting to see them cut up and carefully spaced out, edited, etc.. (can you tell I am not a big fan of their coverage as it is now…?)
