The Voice Earns the Prime Post Superbowl Spot for NBC in February 2012

I continue to shake my head at the shows networks select for the post Superbowl spot.  Now none this may even matter because if we don’t have NFL football in 2011-2012, there will be no Superbowl.  And if you follow sports (which I do) you will know that the NFL labor talks between the owners and the players have gone as well as the Bay of Pigs did in the early ’60s.  So there may not even be a Superbowl to worry about what will be shown on TV after it.   But that still isn’t going to stop me from putting in my two cents about it!

I’m not sure why NBC would pick The Voice to air following the Superbowl.  I’m also not sure why they would announce it right now especially with all the uncertainty surrounding the NFL season.  Do they have to announce it this early?  I don’t know.  But if they don’t, why would they?   We all know NBC has really been taking a beating over the last several broadcast seasons (both in the ratings and in people’s reaction to their programming.)  NBC hasn’t had a bona fide hit in years.  Seriously, the first two nights of the week feature 2 hours of reality programming this fall!!!  That’s 4 hours of prime network slots that are going to The Sing Off and The Biggest Loser.  I’m sure they are big ratings hits for NBC but what does that say about their judgement in programming that they can’t even fill 4 hours on Monday and Tuesday for scripted TV.

Now the Voice has already established an audience.  And it seems the one area that NBC seems to be successful is with reality programming.  I am completely ignoring the debacle we all saw coming with the Jay Leno 10pm show last year by the way.  So I am not lumping that into the reality programming comment. So why would NBC want to promote the one area of programming that seems to be going well for them?   Wouldn’t they rather promote a newer show that could have the potential to break out?   That goes back to my question of why they would announce this so early.   Maybe they had to because maybe they had to determine what show would have to go post Superbowl.  I don’t know why but maybe that’s the case.  It doesn’t make any sense to me but I’m not a program director so what do I know!    But I would think that I would rather throw a show like The Firm, Awake, Prime Suspect, or The Playboy Club a chance at that spot.  Especially if it may be doing so-so in the ratings but could have a chance to explode if given the right opportunity (see Friends and The Practice) or is a new show that could use that as a launch pad (see Survivor the Australian Outback and Undercover Boss.)

Didn’t Glee teach anyone anything?   Glee is a perfect example of targeting the wrong audience, with the wrong show, with a terrible episode, and it failing huge!   Glee certainly didn’t need the extra exposure.  If anything, Glee became overexposed too quickly and giving it the Superbowl spot, didn’t do the show any favors.  Also, I don’t know much of Glee’s audience that also watches the Superbowl (and vice versa) and it didn’t pick up any new viewers as a result.   Just check the ratings for the show after the Superbowl episode.  So it was a bad match from start to finish.  I’m not saying The Voice is a bad match, I just think they should use it for a different show.  Not a reality show that has already premiered that doesn’t need the help.
