2011’s First Cancelation Goes To…..

04 Oct

NBC’s The Playboy Club.

Breaking news, after 3 episodes, NBC has pulled the tail feathers off the new show The Playboy Club.   I’m slightly disappointed because I liked this show.  I know it was probably on the wrong network and would have done better on a Showtime where they could really go all out, but I was hoping people wouldn’t judge it by the name and check it out.  Sadly, it didn’t happen.

So how many of you had The Playboy Club in your “first to be canceled” pools?   Because I really would have thought it would have been Charlie’s Angels!

When I first saw the ads for “Playboy Club” and “Pan Am” all I could think of was “Mad Men”…and I don’t even watch “Mad Men.” I wasn’t sure if two more “oldies” shows would survive and thrive but I figured this one would certainly suffer from the fact anyone who wanted to invest in the subject matter would only watch it on cable…so it could go “all out” with no network TV restrictions. Network TV is too sanitized to do this subject matter full justice, especially with what one can access/see on cable now. If you’re doing a show about the Playboy era, you simply have to go “all in” and do it on cable. Audiences know what they can and can’t get from network TV. This show should have been developed on cable and “turned loose.”

I think a lot people thought that about TPC and Pan Am. But other than the fact that these shows take place in the 60s, none of the three shows are anything alike. I think that was another thing that hurt TPC, people thinking it was a Mad Men rip off and it wasn’t. But ultimately, like we both said, it should have been on cable and it probably would have done much better.
