ANOTHER Comedy Pick Up for NBC

Seriously, another comedy?   According to TV by the Numbers, NBC has picked up freshman comedy “Guys with Kids” for the 2012/2013 TV Season.   This really is lining up with what I posted about earlier with NBC going to more comedies for shorter runs.    There wasn’t any word about the length of the pick up or when it was slated to hit the air (fall or mid-season.)

Is this gloom and doom for some NBC comedies on the bubble….Are You There, Chelsea and Up All Night?   I’ve heard Whitney referred to as a bubble show but based on the ratings, I figured it would be renewed.  I can’t believe people actually watch and enjoy that show, but I guess they do.   But Whitney has been thrown in as a “bubble show” as well.

I don’t know what to think at this point.  NBC is picking up 6 comedies at this point.  Where are they going to put them all?  It has to be this idea of a staggered schedule because it’s the only thing that makes sense.  Let’s break it down:

I’m leaving out 10pm because comedies typically don’t run after the 9:30pm slot.  Thursday night comedies are Community, 30 Rock, The Office, and Parks and Rec….all rumored to be back next season.  Not going on Thursday nights.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday aren’t comedy nights.  So they’re out.  Monday is The Voice and America’s Got Talent.  No room there.  Tuesday usually has the recap from the night before.  So that leaves Wed night which has 2 slots…which I believe rotated between Whitney, Up All Night, and Are You There Chelsea.

Either NBC is going to cut back the reality time (which is the only programming that’s been consistently working for them every year) or it’s going to stagger the comedies throughout the season (which I am in favor of.)   I guess we’ll know Monday at 11am!!!

NBC has picked up and renewed two Dick Wolf shows (they really like that guy.)  Law & Order SVU has been renewed for a 14th season (Holy Crap it’s been on that long) and new series Chicago Fire has been given the go ahead.

After 14 seasons, if you don’t know L&O SVU, I don’t know what to tell you.  As for Chicago Fire, it’s set in Philadelphia and focuses on the lives of nurses.  Oh relax, I’m having some fun!   CF will focus on the lives of firefighters and the brave men and women who take this risk everyday.  It stars Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymond, Eamonn Walker, Teri Reeves, Charlie Barnett, Merle Dandridge, David Eigenberg, and Lauren German.  I guess the only good thing about Monica Raymond being on this show, is that she won’t be on The Good Wife anymore!!!   I don’t know what it is about this actress but I HATE every character she ever plays.  I’m not a fan.  But I still watch it regardless of her casting.

The closer we get to upfronts, the more this information will be leaking out.  So keep checking in so we can discuss as the news unfolds!!!!

Really?  ABC is letting Jimmy Kimmel do a roast for their upfront presentation?  Didn’t they see him completely BOMB the Correspondents Dinner with President Obama not too long ago?  The man simply isn’t funny so I’m not sure why people continue to give him platforms to embarrass himself.

If anyone attends any of these functions, let me know how it was and who got rip roaring drunk and embarrassed themselves…other than Jimmy Kimmel of course…he’s a given.

Upfront Buzz: NBC: 30 Rock, Community, Parks and Rec Renewed….Kind Of!

We are less than a week away from network upfronts.  Up first…NBC.

Ok, now all of you need to stop laughing right now.  I know NBC has had it rough the last several years but each year I have faith the peacock network will break out of its shell.  It may have done it this year if it premiered Bent and Best Friends Forever and Smash in the fall instead of Free Agents, Whitney, and The Playboy Club.   But what are you going to do.   But that’s been NBC’s problem in my opinion…not having bad shows (although Free Agents was HORRIBLE) but picking the wrong shows to air fall vs. mid-season (or late season for BFF and Bent.)

So what is the early buzz?  Looks like 30 Rock will be back (according to but it will only be back for 13-14 episode and season seven will be its final season.  I think it’s time.  30 Rock was one of the best comedies on TV in its heyday.  But last season and surely this season have not been as strong.  It’s really a shadow of its former self.  But that happens and now it will have 13 or 14 episodes to go out the way it wants, which it deserves.

In the same note, Community and Parks and Rec look to also return next season with abbreviated seasons.  Although no word has come down whether or not these will be final seasons or not.  I hope not for either one but I can understand it for Community more so than Parks and Rec.  When Community is on, it’s the best comedy on TV.  It’s smart, witty, and very clever.  But when it’s off, it’s the worst comedy on TV.  It’s awful.  Unfortunately, Community still has too many of the awful episodes to make it a truly great show, in my opinion.

NBC has already picked up 1600 Penn, Go On, Save Me, Animal Practice, and The New Normal.   One thing I already like that NBC is doing, is ordering new and returning shows to shorter runs.  We already discussed 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, and Community and it appears as if all the new comedies will get 13 episode orders as well.  Unless something really hits it big, that’s all they are going to get.

I like this very much.  It will give NBC year round original programming and fewer gaps between new episodes since all the shows are on abbreviated schedules.  It’s actually a very good idea.  Since the Olympics are taking over NBC summer programming, NBC has decided to air most its new comedies, right after the Olympics in August.  It’s a big risk since most people are getting their last-minute vacations in before the fall and viewers aren’t really in “fall programming mode” yet, but it could be a risk with great rewards.  It will have the power of the Olympics to really pump their new programming.  If you are going to take that type of risk, why not use the viewing power of the Olympics to promote it?  It could work.

I’ve vented about programming before where I hate when shows are off the air for extended periods of time only to come back for one episode, then off for 2 weeks, then on for 2 weeks, then off for 3 weeks, then on for 2, then off for 2…it’s incredibly annoying!   So if NBC decides to give shorter schedules to show more original programming, I say kudos!   They would basically be managing their network scheduling as cable networks do with their original programming lasting 10-12 episodes a season.

What do you think of the early news from NBC?  Do you like where they are heading next season?  It’s certainly too early to tell but I think at this point, NBC has to try something, so why not?

SEASON FINALE INITIAL THOUGHTS: Castle “Always” S4 E23 (Quick Recap)

Official Recap and Review Coming Tomorrow!!!

I thought they couldn’t top last year’s finale…I also thought there was no way I would cry as much as last year. Well I was 100000000 times wrong.

I hate to say I told you so buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut…. I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!   I know everyone was worried over a month ago when Castle found out about the “I Love You” she really remembered and it really splintered them.  But as I told you, it didn’t.  I really felt that by the finale or beginning of next season, they would be together.

The bad has to happen before the good….and Lord in Heaven was it good!!!!    Seriously though, wasn’t tonight’s episode (especially the last 2-3 minutes) much more worth it after EVERYTHING Castle and Beckett have been through?   Admit it, it is.

I’m not in my right mind to fully recap this yet.  But I will tomorrow after I’ve had a chance to digest what has happened.   But let’s run down the big issues:

  • Ryan and Esposito have some making up to do and their relationship both professionally and personally will need to be repaired.  And I hope, we don’t come back next season and everything is back to normal with them.  That “betrayal” in Esposito’s eyes, needs to be flushed out.
  • Beckett has quit the 12th.   I’m not sure where the story goes from here.   Does she free-lance?  Does she work for the NJPD?  Does she become a private investigator and hire Ryan and Esposito to come work for her?  I’m not sure.  But at this point, I don’t care.
  • There is a man out for Beckett and he has a name (sort of) and a face (a really handsome face…damn it!)  Before, we knew there was a shooter…someone after Kate.  But he was a faceless, nameless, person with connections we knew vaguely.   Now we know who he is (sort of) and so does Kate.  There is a bigger story at play that is just scratching the surface and getting started
  • FUN FACT: Did anyone else notice that the name of Alexis’ school was “Marlowe.”  You can see it on the podium as she is giving her valedictorian speech.  For those who are looking at their screen saying “so what”, Marlowe is for Andrew W. Marlowe…the creator and show runner for Castle.

I think that’s all the big stuff that happened.  Why are you all yelling at me?   What do you mean I’m forgetting some……OH THAT’S RIGHT!!!   What we have all been waiting for since the pilot has happened…Castle and Beckett are together for real.  Not a dream, not a cover….for real.  She wants him, he wants her, and they go at it.  It.  Was.  AWESOME!!!   There is nothing hotter than watching a man throw a woman against the wall (in the heat of passion mind you) and start going to town on each other.   It was great and beautiful at the same time.  Kate’s wall completely came down.  She’s known it for a long time, it’s been slowly coming down which she has admitted.  But sometimes it takes a come to Jesus conversation (like the one between her and Castle around the half way point of the finale) and a near death experience to have that wall crumble completely around you and you are finally ready to face what you have been wanting to face for a long time.  In a strange way, with everything going on, she finally feels….safe.   And there is no one that makes her feel safer than Rick Castle.   And it all came out.  All the repressed feelings, all the anger, all the passion, all the frustration…..all the love.   It all came out in a beautiful, fiery, ball of flame in Castle’s living room.  As she caringly grabbed his hand to lead him to his bedroom, she was finally ready to go where she hadn’t been quite ready to go…quite ready to face.  Into the arms of the man she has loved for a long time.

Sorry if this is very jumbled and quite frankly a mess right now.    But I had to let my initial thoughts out and to share them with all the Caskett fans out there who have been waiting for this moment for a long time.   I will more intelligently recap it tomorrow.   But for now, I’m just enjoying what I just witnessed and I am doing a little happy dance around my computer!!!!!   Castle and Beckett….together at last!!!!!   WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!

Ok so what are your initial thoughts?  Did you love it?   Hate it?  (How could you hate it, but to each his or her own.)  Did you stand up and cheer like I did when they started kissing and going at it?   Are you worried about Ryan and Esposito at all?   Let me know what you think!!!!

RECAP & REVIEW: Once Upon A Time “An Apple Red As Blood” S1 E21

This is one of my new favorites on TV.  I know it doesn’t seem like it because I haven’t really written about it, but I LOVE this show.  OUAT’s penultimate episode basically brought everything back full circle to the pilot.  There were some significant learnings in this episode and sets up for what should be an epic finale next week!

The Queen/Regina is starting to feel desperate.  Things are spinning out of her control and she goes to Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin for help.  He tells her he is not going to help her anymore because he wants the curse broken for his own reasons (which he neglected to share with us.)  But we learn a HUGE piece of information during this exchange….if Emma is killed, the curse will be broken.  Now it makes sense.  I’ve asked myself this question several times and then gotten yelled at by my husband saying “it’s a TV show!”   I’ve always wondered why Regina simply didn’t kill Emma.  She’s evil, she’s murdered before to get what she wants.  If she can kill her own father, Emma should be no skin off her nose.  Now we know why.  Emma’s death breaks the curse.

Regina enlists The Mad Hatter to help her open a portal back to Fantasyland to see if she retrieve some things to help her get rid of Emma.  There isn’t enough magic in Storybrooke (even using the ring Daniel gave her) to get Regina back to Fantasyland.  However, the magic from the ring is strong enough to open a very small window where she can reach through and grab something small, quickly.   She knows exactly what she wants and we flash back to the Queen and Snow having a negotiation (more on that in a minute.)   Needless to say this is a twist on the apple story we all knew growing up and Regina is able to grab the poisoned apple.

Regina gets back to her house and proceeds to cut up the apple and make a very delicious looking turnover.  Just so happens that Ms. Swan shows up at her house.   Emma loves Henry.  She wants him back in her life, full-time.  But that can’t happen.  Emma feels Henry’s life has actually gotten worse since her arrival so she wants to leave Storybrooke, but not without seeing Regina first.  She tells Regina she wants a truce and that she is leaving town but that she has one request, to see Henry whenever she wants.  She thinks the animosity between them hasn’t helped Henry so she wants to bury the hatchet, leave town, but still visit Henry when she can.  Seems fair enough to me.   Regina is floored by this and completely agrees with Emma’s wishes.  As a sign of good faith (yeah right) Regina gives Emma the apple turnover she made for her travels back to Boston. Emma graciously accepts it.

Back at her apartment, Henry comes in and begs her not to leave.  She has to believe and she has to help them.   She doesn’t cave to Henry’s demands and tells him that she’s doing this for him.  He is desperate at this point and when he sees the turnover, he asked her who made it.  She tells him it’s from Regina and he begs her not to eat it.  Emma is getting frustrated with Henry thinking Regina is trying to kill her and goes to pick up the turnover to eat it to prove to him how wrong he is.  Instead, he picks up the turnover and he eats it to prove how wrong she is and promptly keels over with Emma screaming his name.   As Mr. Gold warned Regina…”all magic comes with a price!”

While this is all happening, in Fantasyland, Snow White is looking to break into the King’s castle to free Prince Charming.  I love that in this version of Snow White’s story, she’s very bad ass!  It’s awesome!  She has enlisted the help of Little Red Riding Hood and her granny, the 7 dwarfs, and every fairy ever created.    They all storm the castle and Snow is able to get to the dungeon where James is being kept…or so she thought.  It was a mirage of mirrors set up by the Queen to get Snow there so she can request a meeting with her.  Snow agrees.

They meet where all the bad blood went down…the stables.    There, the Queen shows Snow Daniel’s grave and finally tells her the truth about what happened….that Daniel was murdered and that it was all her fault.  Now here is where I would have stood my ground more if I were Snow.  I would have said to the Queen “really, you want to blame an 8-year-old girl who was manipulated by a very power woman who also had magical powers.   You, yourself, were manipulated by her so many times yet an 8-year-old is held to a higher standard.  I WAS 8 FOR GOD SAKES!!!  Cut me some frigging slack!  Why aren’t you blaming your mother?”   But she didn’t so I’m moving on.  The Queen makes Snow a deal, bite the poisoned apple and Prince Charming doesn’t die.  Snow tells her congratulations, she won.  She bites the apples and collapses.

What I think is so cool about all of this is that both Snow White and her grandson both engage in incredibly unselfish acts out of love.  Snow eats the apple to save Charming’s life and Henry eats the apple turnover to save Emma’s and show her that she needs to believe.  It was very well laid out and I loved the symmetry in the scenes.

I have one comment before moving onto the finale next week.   I’ve read many articles, blogs, and posts and listened to many podcasts where people blame Emma for not believing and are giving her a hard time.  I know it’s a TV show but let’s stop and think for a minute.  Imagine that your son, whom you gave up for adoption 10 years ago, shows up at your door requesting your help.   He tells you that you are savior of all the fairy tale characters that we all have grown up reading about or watching in movies.  Not only are these characters real, and not only are you the only person who can save them, but you are also the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming.   Show of hands, how many of you would believe this?   Come on, don’t be shy!   All I’m saying is that I’m cutting Emma a little slack.  Now, having said all that, you have to imagine that at some point, when all these crazy things start happening, when adults like August and Jefferson start telling you that they are fairy tale characters as well and that Emma needs to believe, that you would start to raise an eye brow to what people are saying.  I’m saying jump in with two feet and believe.   But you have to admit to yourself that something is off.  I think Emma does believe that and I think she believes something beyond the norm is happening in Storybrooke, but she’s just not ready to believe “Once Upon A Time…” just yet.

Now that Henry is in the hospital fighting for his life, will all that change?   Is this the push Emma needs to believe?   Will she stay and fight for all the characters who are robbed of their rightful lives?   I guess we will find out next week during the season finale of OUAT!!!!

RECAP & REVIEW: Game of Thrones “The Old Gods and The New” S2 E6

It’s hard to believe we are already half way through this season of GoT.  This show is so good, I wish this would get a full 22 episode season vs. 10 episodes.  It just isn’t enough.  I WANT MORE!!!!  This anger you are sensing is probably the show rubbing off on me because there were many angry characters last night, and for good reason….Robb learns Theon has betrayed him and his family, Cersei believes she is betrayed by her brother Tyrion, Joffrey doesn’t like having pastry thrown at him, and Dani’s dragons are gone.  People are severely pissed off.

I think dying at the hands of a direwolf, as I have suggested before, would be too kind for Joffrey.  We have to find something more excruciating for him.  What is this kid’s problem?  In all seriousness, I wouldn’t mind diving into what makes Joffrey such an angry young man.  He hasn’t been alive long enough to be that belligerent with everyone who crosses his path.   And what, for the love of God, did Sansa ever do to him that he leaves her to the savages to rape and kill her?  I started crying my eyes out during that scene.  I was so terrified for her.  But luckily Tyrion, the only one who seems to care about Sansa, made sure she was ok and had someone save her just in time.   This girl is slated to be your wife and she has been nothing but loyal to you.  So why is Joffrey treating her like garbage?  Oh that’s right, because he’s an asshole.

From one person who has no business being that upset, to another who has every right.   If you thought Robb Stark was mad before, his head is now ready to explode!   While moving towards King’s Landing to take out the Lannisters, a person he trusted, whom he thought was on his side, has betrayed him.  Theon, who initially went back to his father to ask for his help in taking down the Lannisters and teaming with the Stark army, has flipped sides and now is with his father’s army and has stormed into Winterfell and claimed that he is now King of the North.  He threatens Bran and manipulates him that the right thing to do, to keep his people safe, is to back down and turn Winterfell over to Theon.   Bran does exactly what Theon asks.  One of the Stark’s most loyal compatriots doesn’t take the news so well and challenges Theon and his newly found power.  He really puts him in his place and as a result Theon orders him to prison.  However, one of Theon’s advisors tells him that he will never be respected if he allows people to speak to him that way and must put him to death.  Another loyal Stark follower tells him it would be a bad idea to do this in front of his new people and that he should punish him another way.  Theon ops for beheading.  And in one of the most brutal death’s I’ve seen in a while, Theon struggles to get the head off with his sword and eventually has to kick it off, his head.  That’s a rough way to go!   The part that really breaks your heart is that you can see Theon doesn’t want to do this.  He wants no part of this.  But he is so desperate to be accepted that he will do what he needs to do for that acceptance.  He was raised by Ned Stark but for someone reason, all of sudden, doesn’t feel like a true part of the family.  So he is making decisions to get back into the good graces of his blood family, the Greyjoys.  I’m not sure of his logic.  The Starks treated Theon more like family than his own family ever had, yet when push comes to shove, he sides with the family that shunned him?  Stupid!  It’s going to get him killed.

Just when Dani thinks she may have worked her way into the leader of Qarth’s good graces to use his ships….access denied.  He appreciates her passion and fire but she has no army, she has no connections in King’s Landing, she really has no plan.   She has nothing other than her passion and her ambition which, until he laid it out the way he did, I didn’t realize it either.  He’s right.  What does she have.  She’s making some HUGE assumptions about what will happen in King’s Landing but she doesn’t have anything to back it up.  As a result, he denies her use of the ships.  Meanwhile, the other member of the 13 keeps telling her, marry me and I’ll help you get the throne.  How?  Why not help her and if you do and succeed, then she’ll marry you.  That’s how I would play it.  But this isn’t even the worst thing that happens to Dani.   After coming back and seeing a blood bath in Qarth with many people murdered, you just knew what had happened and Dani sensed it too.  She runs to her room and her worst nightmare has become a reality…the dragons are gone.   At some point this chick is just going to snap.  I think we’re going to see that next week.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I kind of like Tywin Lannister.  Tywin comes across to me an incredibly powerful and tough man but he also seems fair and learned.  I love the way he is treating Arya.  He seems genuinely interested in her and sees something special in her.  While everyone hates the Lannisters, it’s more Cersei, Jamie, and Joffrey that people have a problem with.  And some people do have issues with Tyrion, but it’s mainly Cersei, Jamie, and Joffrey.  I don’t really hear the venom towards Tywin.  Maybe there will be more to come out about the type of leader he is, but as of right now, I am ok with him.  Now time will tell if he’s known all along that she’s a Stark or if Baelish was able to tell him who she really is (if he recognized her, which I think he did.)

While all this is going on, Jon Snow is falling in love.  I’m kidding…or am I?  The poor Stark boys.  No time for romance in their lives.  Robb turns into a pile of goo each time he sees Talisa and his mother basically tells him that he has no time for that.  Fighting a war, you have to make some sacrifices and romance is one of them.  Or is this a mom not wanting her baby boy to have another woman in his life?  Then you have Jon Snow, basically in the same position Theon was in of having to prove himself by murdering someone he doesn’t want to murder.  But unlike Theon, he doesn’t kill her.   Their camp has captured a wildling but since she has no bargaining chip, they want her dead and they want Jon Snow to do it.  He can’t it.  She escapes but he tracks her down and basically takes her hostage until he figures out what to do with her.  In the meantime, some spooning time is in order with Ygritte grinding against him as if she is trying to awaken little Jon.

I can’t believe we only have 4 episodes left!!  It isn’t enough!!!  I want more!!!!  But just like wanting Ned Stark to come back to life, it isn’t going to happen.

RECAP & REVIEW: Castle “Undead Again” S4 E22

See what happens when you communicate?  Even if you are communicating on a different matter that has subtext relevant to what the big issue at hand is, it still counts!  Last night we got the conversation all of us Caskett fans have been waiting for since Castle learned Beckett remembered him telling her that he loved her.

The case was pretty interesting.  Much more interesting than I thought it was going to be.  And while I like Lanie, I like this ME MUCH better.  I love that he puts Castle in his place time and time again!  The quick recap is that a man was murdered by what appeared to be a zombie…”Killer’s A Zombie” (high-five) is how Castle announced it at the 12th.  While Beckett and Esposito were on one side of believing this was a human un-sub not a zombie un-sub, Ryan and Castle were on the side of believing it was a zombie.  When the suspect shows up dead at the morgue but then is alive after the ME slams a syringe in his arm, the zombie theory gains some momentum.   But as to be expected, there were no zombie’s committing crimes.  The “killer” Kyle, was part of a zombie underground culture and was drugged by a man who wanted the victim dead for sleeping with his fiance.  The drug is able to put the victim in such a state that a person can control and get them to do whatever they want.  One of the side effects is the appearance of death.  So even though Kyle did actual killing, he wasn’t charged since he was on drugs (slipped to him by the real killer) and instructed to do what the killer wanted.  He had no recollection of the murder and was free to go.

Can you imagine?  You wake up, IN THE MORGUE, when the last thing you remember is being with your zombie pals yucking it up.  You find out that not only were you drugged, but you were brainwashed into murdering another human being.   And, people thought you were dead because of the side effect of the drug.  I don’t know about any of you, but that would certainly mess me up for the rest of my life.  He will need some serious therapy to even begin to work through that insanity.

Speaking of therapy, we have the biggest piece of communication to finally happen between Castle and Beckett, even if it wasn’t a direct discussion.  After seeing Kyle walk off and both Castle and Beckett commenting how they hope he can get past what happened to him, Beckett tells him about how therapy really helps.  That at first you just want to figure out how to put one foot in front of the other but that eventually you get back to a good place.  The light starts to go off in Castle’s head.  She tells him that she is getting to the point where she can finally face everything that happened that day….EVERYTHING.  He tells her that he understands.  She also reminds him of the conversation they had regarding the wall she has built up and that the wall is finally starting to come down.  Castle tells her he would like to be there when the wall comes down and she agrees with him.  “Tomorrow” Beckett asks?   “Tomorrow” Castle confirms.    (Key the flying doves and the opera voices singing Hallelujah!!)

So after being a douche bag the past few weeks, Castle learns that she wasn’t ready to face what happened.  She needed time and to able to talk to someone who can help her get to a point where she can face him honestly.  If only he’d asked her about this weeks ago he would have saved himself all the grief and putting her through hell.   But I knew there was a method to the madness and I think the way it played out is SOOOOOOO much better than what we originally wanted..Castle confronting Beckett about what he had heard her say.

Beckett is ready for her wall to come down and tell Castle how she feels and Castle is ready to throw her on her desk and have crazy stinky sex with her to show his reciprocation of feelings.  But remember, we have one more secret to come out.   I believe it comes out next week.  Check out the promo below and the scene where Castle is asking her not to look into this or she could get killed, I think is the result of her finding out he was investigating behind her back.   Now, is that before or after the kiss it appears Beckett is going for at the end of the clip?   We don’t know.  But I’m sure it will leave us wanting more IMMEDIATELY as soon as the finale is over.

What are your thoughts Castle fans?   Are you happy with “Undead Again” and looking forward to the finale?  Do Castle and Beckett HAVE to get together in the finale for you to be satisfied with the season?   Sound off below!!!
