TV’s Columbo, Peter Falk, Passed Away at the Age of 83

One of the most iconic TV characters of all time lost his voice on Thursday evening.   Peter Falk passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, CA after a long battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 83.

Falk had a very long and successful career but he is most known for his ragged, lovable, cigar toting, crime solving detective Lt. Columbo.  Columbo was the benchmark character for many following TV detectives that graced our screens year after year.   On the show, criminals usually underestimated his intelligence and his perceptive nature.   And it’s usually what got them caught!    Columbo was not a slick rick detective.  He was an everyday man who was very good at his job that was rarely seen out of his trademark rumpled trench coat.

I remember watching several Columbo TV shows and TV movies and Falk was always sensational.   My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

Criminal Minds News: It’s Official!!!! Prentiss is in and Seaver is out!!

In news that I’m sure will surprise no one but will probably send most fans into a happy dance, Paget Brewster will be back as Emily Prentiss on Criminal Minds this season.  I am so excited about this because I can’t wait to see the dynamic of the team when she returns.   As you all know if you watch CM, everyone except JJ and Hotch think Prentiss is dead.  How will they all react when they find out she’s still alive?  Especially her partner Derrick Morgan?  I can’t wait to see!!!   I would have to make the assumption that her return also means it will also bring back the great storyline of trying to find and capture Doyle.  Will they do it with Prentiss or will they have to do it before so she can come out of hiding?  I am really anxious to see how they handle that.   I remember being furious this time last year when I found out JJ wasn’t coming back except for 2 episodes to wrap up her story and that Emily would be cut and most likely leaving as well (which she did.)  I couldn’t understand, other than the financial aspect, why CM was getting rid of two strong female characters.  I thought if you wanted to cut back on actor salaries, Joe Montangna must be making a pretty penny.  Couldn’t they cut him?  I don’t like to say that because I love Montangna as an actor and think he’s terrific.  But I don’t think he brings as much to CM as the other characters.  My opinion.  I like Rossi but I wouldn’t be upset if I didn’t see him again.  Everyone else though…Hotch, Morgan, Prentiss, JJ, Garcia, and Reid…would break my heart.   That’s why I’m so happy that both ladies are back and everyone else is also in tact.  Now if they can just sign Thomas Gibson to that damn contract because he is the heart and soul of the BAU and I don’t want to see CM without him!!!

But God giveth and He taketh away.  With Paget Brewster’s return, that sent Rachel Nichols’ Agent Ashley Seaver packing.  No loss though.  She just never fit in and unfortunately for the actress was set up to fail.  So many viewers were upset with the dismissal of Brewster and Cook that no matter who came in to “replace” them (more so Cook) it wasn’t going to work and the fans most likely weren’t going to like her.  And that ended up being the case.   Nichols is great so hopefully she ends up on another show soon.  She just didn’t fit CM.

What are your thoughts CM fans?   Are you happy to see our favorite ladies back in action?

Great news for fans of the following five shows:

Gossip Girl

The Vampire Diaries
America’s Next Top Model

ALL 5 SHOWS HAVE BEEN RENEWED!!!!!!   For fans of these shows, you don’t have to wait until the dreaded upfronts in 3 weeks to hear about these shows because they are coming back!!!    There is still no word on the fate of Nikita, Hellcats, and One Tree Hill.  If I could have swapped Nikita with ANTM I would have been a royally happy woman.   But 4 out of 5 isn’t bad.

BREAKING NEWS: All My Children and One Life to Live Canceled by ABC

Wow.  I knew soaps weren’t doing great but this is a little surprising that the trigger has actually been pulled.  Breaking news: ABC has canceled long running soaps All My Children and One Life to Live.   The cancellation is happening to make room for 2 more talk shows…The Chew hosted by Mario Batalli as well as other names in the food and entertainment industry that will focus on food, recipes, parties, entertaining, and nutrition and the other show is called (it’s a working title) The Revolution.   Not sure what that’s about yet.

I grew up watching soaps…mainly Days of our Lives and then in my college and later years added General Hospital to the mix.  Sad to say though, I haven’t watched either soap in about 3 years and I watched Days for 20+years.  My first episode of Days, when a was little kid, was Bo stealing Hope away from her wedding to Larry Welch.  My  mom and aunt watched it so I started watching it with them in the summer.  I used to tape both shows and watch when I got home.  But in the last 3 years, with all the new TV at night ( with the advent of excellent cable original programming) I just never got the time to catch up on the soaps.   They built up on the DVR to about 3-4 months of episodes and I could never catch up so I just deleted them and never started again.  I feel horrible because I feel like I am part of the reason why soaps are getting canceled.  However my 2 shows are still on the air!   Go figure.

So what is left?  Days, GH, and Y&R are the only 3 left.  Is the Bold and the Beautiful still on?  I’m not sure.  But over the years we have lost Another World, Passions, Guiding Light, As the World Turns. All gone.   Pretty soon there will be no daytime TV soaps left.  It’s a shame because they really are great guilty pleasures.

I feel terrible for the fans of both of these shows.  AMC has been on since 1970 and OLTL has been on the air since 1968.  Both started has half hour shows but eventually expanded to a full hour.  The iconic Agnes Nixon created both shows.  And Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) is one of the most popular and recognized characters in all of TV history!  It looks like AMC will wrap up in September 2011 and OLTL will end in January 2012.  I wish nothing but the best for the casts and crews of both shows.

“The Closer” Promotes Mary McDonnell to Series Regular

So what does this mean exactly?  Many have speculated that with Kyra leaving the show, that McDonnell would take over as the lead.   Could this be a step in that direction?   My opinion is no.

The Closer is Brenda Leigh Johnson/Kyra Sedgwick.  You can’t have The Closer without the closer right?   McDonnell’s Captain Rayder, while a terrific character I like very much, has a completely different role in the LAPD.  She’s IA.  I’m not saying she can’t make the switch to Deputy Chief of Major Crimes but part of what made Brenda great, was this ability to get confessions no one else could.  Now all of sudden, Captain Rayder is going to do it?  I don’t think so.

The only way this works is if Rayder is now in charge of Major Crimes or maybe Pope takes over Major Crimes and she becomes a lead detective or second in command to Pope and they do a similar type of cop show with the same cast but it isn’t The Closer.  Either way, I’m glad I’ll get to see more of Mary McDonnell’s Captain Rayder on my screen because she is fantastic.  And the creative team will have plenty of time to figure out how they want this to go because Kyra’s version of The Closer, doesn’t wrap up until Summer of 2012.

Two and A Half Men Shut Down for the rest of the season

Wow!   Charlie Sheen has managed to destroy the number 1 show on TV this season and yet doesn’t take any responsibility for it.  Does that really shock anyone?  Probably not.

This is such an amazing development and both parties are acting like idiotic high school boys.  Don’t get me wrong this is all Charlie Sheen’s doing.  But does Chuck Lorre really need to stoke the fires with his vanity cards?  Probably not necessary knowing what a fragile mental state Sheen is in.  Well in an interview today, when Sheen was asked about it, he went off and ripped Lorre making comments like the following:

“I embarrassed him in front of his children and the world, by healing at a pace that his unevolved mind cannot process.  Last I checked, Chaim, I’ve spent close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold, and the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write. Clearly someone who believes he’s above the law.”

Um, ok.  So much for being the bigger person.  As a result of Sheen’s lovely interview, the following statement was released from TPTB at CBS:

“Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season.”

And if that wasn’t enough, after the announcement about production being shut down, Sheen released a letter to TMZ.com:

“What does this say about Haim Levine [Chuck Lorre] after he tried to use his words to judge and attempt to degrade me. I gracefully ignored this folly for 177 shows … I fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can’t handle my power and can’t handle the truth. I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels especially if they wind up in my octagon. Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words — imagine what I would have done with my fire breathing fists. I urge all my beautiful and loyal fans who embraced this show for almost a decade to walk with me side-by-side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong.

Remember these are my people … not yours…we will continue on together…”

Charlie Sheen

Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up!!!!  Stay tuned.

UPDATE: When I wrote this, I had yet to see this gem of a quote from the Alex Jones interview:

“I was told if I went on the attack they would cancel the show, so I’m seeing if they’re telling the truth,”

What an asshole.  So because of his ego, he is going to risk the livelihood of the rest of the cast and crew so he can prove a point?  Is he serious?  There have already been some stories about how the crew is furious with him because when the show isn’t going, these guys don’t get paid.  So when Sheen goes to rehab and the show is put on hiatus for his douchey ways, the crew doesn’t get paid.  Way to go Charlie!  And now because Chuck Lorre has become his enemy (how that started I have no idea) he will risk everyone’s jobs to push some buttons.   Why?   Because he’s a narcissistic ass!!!

This has to be unprecedented in TV that the #1 comedy show could be canceled because its lead actor is a buffoon.  I would rather them either recast the role or get rid of Charlie Sheen’s character somehow and bring on someone else before they cancel the show.   And if it doesn’t work out, then cancel it.  But the rest of the cast and crew shouldn’t be penalized because Sheen is a nut job.   What a complete and utter mess this has become!
