I’m not going to lie, I was disappointed in the season 2 premiere. But then again, I was hot and cold with Cougar Town last year. I started watching CT last year because it is from Bill Lawrence, the genius behind Scrubs. I watched about 5 episodes and then I stopped because I wasn’t feeling it. A few weeks later, it was on in the background as my husband and I were working and my husband really enjoyed it and I have to say, I did too. So I started watching it again and it was much better than I remember. I didn’t laugh every week the way I did with Scrubs, but I laughed a decent amount of times and it was that mindless comedy that fit the bill Wednesday nights. The 2 best characters on the show are Jordan (I know her name is Ellie but she will always be Jordan to me) and Bobby. Andy and Travis are pretty good too but they can have some dud eppies. Grayson and Jules are fine. I like Grayson more than Jules but neither really do a whole lot for me. It’s funny, I really like them sometimes and they have their moments. But for the most part, eh. I can’t STAND Laurie. In particular, when Busy Philipps speaks, it’s like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. I don’t know if that’s how she normally speaks but if it is, I pity the people around her. The only thing I like about Laurie, is that it gives Jordan someone to brutalize, and Christa Miller does it beautifully!
This season kicks off with Travis still heading to college, Grayson and Jules still dating, and we learn that Bobby does have a slight issue with that. It was also the guest star appearance most hyped in the off-season by the media, Jennifer Aniston. Bonnie was good. I wasn’t blown away by her appearance but I also thought she was the best part of the episode…what does that tell you. The best part of the appearance was when Jules was being neurotic about Grayson and went to see Bonnie at her yoga class. She’s talking to Jordan about how she has such a great connection with Bonnie and how much Bonnie likes her. Meanwhile Bonnie sees Jules and tries to sneak away and hide herself because she doesn’t want to see Jules. It results in her getting into a car accident and you start to see just how crazy Bonnie is. And I know I just ripped Laurie above, but I thought the nicest part of the episode was between her and Travis when she admits (while she thinks he has passed out from a “who can stay awake the longest” competition to prep him for college) that she will miss him when he goes to college and he hears it because he really isn’t sleeping. It’s moments like that I see signs of a good character from Laurie. But then she speaks and annoys me all over again. Oh well.
I really don’t know what to make of this show. My husband really likes it so we’ll keep watching. But I hope it starts to get stronger so it’s a little more tolerable.
