Mid Season Premiere Dates!

It’s hard to believe that we are mid way through the 2010-2011 TV season but we are!  There are lots of shows premiering in Jan-Mar 2011 (probably because the shows in 2010 weren’t so great.)  There is also A LOT of moving shows to new days and times since there is a lot of burn off that needs to happen with shows.  It can be very confusing so I am going to break it down as best I can.

Below are all the premiere dates of new shows starting in Jan.  Some shows are returning from hiatus (like Pretty Little Liars, Survivor, and American Idol) and some are brand new shows (like The Cape, Harry’s Law, and Mr Sunshine) and the new shows are highlighted for you.  So check these out and the daily grids should be coming soon!

ABC Mid-Season Schedule

ABC is the last of the major networks to announce their mid-season schedule.  Looks like 3 shows are entering the mix: 1 in January and 1 in February and 1 in April.  Check out the trailers below:

Off the Map (Premieres Wednesday January 12th at 10pm)

Mr Sunshine (Premieres Wednesday February 9th at 9:30pm)

Happy Endings (Premieres Wednesday April 13th at 10:00pm)

Of all these shows, I am most excited for Mr Sunshine.  Matthew Perry, Allison Janney, Andrea Anders, James Lesure…how can you not be excited with that cast?  The other 2 I will give a chance to but I don’t have high hopes for them.

From, here is a brief summary on each show:

Mr. Sunshine

Matthew Perry stars as Ben Donovan, the self-involved manager of a second-rate San Diego sports arena who begins to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday. Working alongside him is his boss and arena owner, Crystal—attractive, powerful and highly erratic; Alice—the cute, tomboyish marketing director and Ben’s friend with benefits; Alonzo—a former basketball player, handsome and unbelievably happy; Ben’s assistant, Heather—pretty, sweet, but terrifying because she once lit a boyfriend on fire; Crystal’s son, Roman—sweet-faced, clueless and Ben’s newest employee; and a hapless operations crew whom Ben refers to collectively as the “Steves.”

Mr. Sunshine stars Matthew Perry (Friends) as Ben, Allison Janney (The West Wing) as Crystal, Andrea Anders as Alice, James Lesure as Alonzo, Nate Torrence as Roman and Portia Doubleday as Heather.

Off the Map

Welcome to “la ciudad de las estrellas” (the city of stars), a tiny town in the South American jungle which has one understaffed, under-stocked medical clinic. That’s where idealistic young Dr. Lily Brenner just landed, along with fellow doctors Mina Minard and Tommy Fuller. All of these young doctors are running away from personal demons, but they aren’t the only ones with emotional baggage. Take the legendary and enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was the youngest Chief of Surgery at UCLA. He walked away from it all to found the clinic. Together with his right-hand doctor, Otis Cole, the mysterious Dr. Ryan Clark and local doctor Zita Alvarez, he’ll teach the newcomers how to save lives in the most challenging environment they’ve ever worked in—while taking them on adventures of a lifetime.  In this ensemble drama, six doctors who have lost their way will go to the ends of the earth to try to remember the reasons why they wanted to become doctors in the first place.

Off the Map stars Jonathan Castellanos as Charlie, Valerie Cruz as Zitajalehrena Alvarez (Zee), Caroline Dhavernas as Lily Brenner, Jason George as Otis Cole, Zach Gilford as Tommy Fuller, Mamie Gummer as Mina Minard, Martin Henderson as Ben Keeton and Rachelle Lefevre as Ryan Clark.

Happy Endings

Forget who gets to keep the ring—when a couple splits, the real question is, who gets to keep the friends? In this modern comedy, a couple’s break-up will complicate all of their friends’ lives and make everyone question their choices. When life throws you for a curve, hold on tight to the people you love. Every circle of friends has someone who’s the gravitational center. For years, perfect couple Dave and Alex drew their friends in and held them together. Now that they’ve split, does this group have the stuff to stay together? Or do Max, Brad, Jane and Penny have to choose sides? Suddenly every event is a negotiation… like, who gets to go on the annual ski trip? There are a lot of big questions to be answered, but this group has been together so long, somehow, little by little, they’ll figure out how to hold on, even though their center is split up. It helps that Dave and Alex have agreed to stay friends. But there will definitely be other complications down the road. This show isn’t afraid to ask the embarrassing personal questions that inevitably arise in every long-term, close-knit group of friends.

Happy Endings stars Elisha Cuthbert (24) as Alex, Eliza Coupe as Jane, Zachary Knighton as Dave, Adam Pally as Max, Damon Wayans, Jr. as Brad and Casey Wilson as Penny.

NBC Mid-Season Scheduling

Lots of changes coming to NBC’s mid-season schedule.   3 new scripted shows (2 dramas and 1 comedy) are heading to the lineup and some shows are being moved to different time slots.   Here is how it shakes out as of today:  (new shows are in CAPS)

  • 8-9pm Chuck
  • 9-10pm THE CAPE* (1/17)
  • 10-11pm HARRY’S LAW (1/17)
  • The Event Returns February 28th with a 2 hr episode 9-11pm and it’s regular 1 hr slot (9-10pm) on March 7th

  • 8-10pm The Biggest Loser: Couples (1/4)
  • 10-11pm Parenthood (1/4 for 4 episodes)

  • 8-8:30pm Community (1/20)
  • 8:30-9pm PERFECT COUPLES (1/20)
  • 9-9:30pm The Office (1/20)
  • 9:30-10pm Parks & Recreation (1/20)
  • 10-10:30pm 30 Rock (1/20)
  • 10:30-11pm Outsourced (1/20)

  • 8-9pm Who Do You Think You Are (1/21)
  • 9-11pm Dateline NBC (1/7)

  • 7-8pm Dateline NBC
  • 8-9pm The Marriage Ref (3/6)
  • 9-11pm Celebrity Apprentice (3/6)

* THE CAPE has a 2 hour premier on Sunday January 9th from 9-11pm.  It will then move to its regular scheduled time slot of 9pm Mondays starting January 17th.

I think The Cape is the most engrossing of the new mid-season shows.    There really isn’t anything else like it on TV and I love shows like that.   But that usually means that it won’t do well since it isn’t a 24th Law & Order or 15th CSI spinoff.   But I hope unlike great unique, well written shows before (Reunion and Eli Stone come to mind) that it has a chance to stay and generate an audience.

I love the cast of Harry’s Law and I am a sucker for a good lawyer show.  And as long as it doesn’t get too weird and wacky (like Boston Legal…ugh) I think I could really like Harry’s Law.

Perfect Couples I really don’t know much about.  I will give it a few episodes and see how it does.

What do you think of this moving shows around the schedule?  I’m ok with it (especially if it benefits I show I like and kills a show I don’t…ha) but switch it and stay with it.  It’s hard to generate viewers if they can never find it on the schedule.  I really think that was the downfall of Samantha Who?  It was on for 6 weeks, then pulled off the air for 6 weeks.   Then it was back on at a different date and time, then it was off again.  Then it was back on at ANOTHER date and time, and then it was off permanently.  You can’t do that to a show and expect to get loyal viewers.  And if you don’t care, then just pull the show and be done with it.   But to mess with the cast and crew of these shows like that is awful.   I wonder if moving Parenthood, Chase, and L&O: LA is good or bad for these shows.  The only move I know to be a death sentence is the dreaded moving to Friday nights.  I guess time will tell.

What new show on NBC are you most looking forward to?   Or do you not care for any of them?
