BREAKING NEWS: Charlie Sheen Fired from Two and a Half Men

I have to say, this surprises me a little.   CBS and Warner Bros. have mutually decided to part ways with disgruntled and arguably disturbed actor Charlie Sheen.  So Sheen has been fired from Two and a Half Men.   Wow.

I really thought this was going to go one of two ways…either they would find a way to work something out and Sheen would be back on set and ready to go for next year’s TaaHM 2011-2012 premiere in the fall with maybe some more money for him but a possible moral clause built into the contract or they cancel the show outright.   Firing him says to me they plan to go on without him and either bring in someone new as a whole new character or quite possibly recast the role.

I think it’s the right call and I’ll tell you why.  By outright canceling it, the network will no longer make any additional money with the show.  Granted they have already made a fortune with it and will continue to do so with all the syndication contacts it has secured.  But it’s the #1 comedy on TV!!   There is still plenty of money to be had and the networks don’t want to just walk away from that.  Plus, you know the ratings for next year will, initially, be through the roof to see how this show does without Charlie.  If the role is recast, people are going to want to see it.  If the character is someone new, people are going to want to see it.  If it’s just One and a Half Men, people are going to want to see it.  Everyone will be tuning in next year!!!  And if it works out to be a successful transition and the show is still #1 for a few more years…great for them.  If it doesn’t do well and they need to cancel it after the 2011/2012 season, so be it.  They were probably going to cancel it anyway with Sheen being out so what’s the difference?   At least by trying to move on, you give the show, the cast, and the crew another shot at making it successful again.  And think of all the advertising revenue they will be able to secure in those first few episodes next year!!!  It really makes perfect sense.

Now which direction should they go in?   Recast or new character?  In one sense, Charlie’s lifestyle on the show is a HUGE part of the show and to lose that would be significant.  It’s hard to envision TaaHM without the wise-cracking, womanizing, lush, whether it’s Sheen or someone else playing the part.  On the other hand, shows have done it before and gone in a different direction.  Who says TaaHM can’t do the same thing and bring in a new character to play off Jon Cryer’s stiff but oddly charming Alan Harper?  My opinion (whatever that’s worth), don’t recast and introduce a new character.  To recast a title character on a major hit show after 8 seasons must be a first.  And I’m excluding soap operas here because that happens all the time in soapland.  But has that ever happened on any show where one of the main characters is recast after such a long period of time?  And I’m not talking replaced with a new character, I mean playing the same exact part with a new actor.  I don’t think so.  And I don’t think it should happen here.

I haven’t commented on the Charlie Sheen fiasco because quite frankly, enough people have been talking about it (including Sheen himself) that I didn’t feel the need to pile on.  The one thing I will say is that I worry about Sheen.  I know everyone is having fun at his expense and believe me, he has brought on the ridicule himself.  I’m not denying he doesn’t deserve it with all his rambling and his goddesses and other nonsense.   But besides all that, I am truly concerned for his health both physically and mentally.  If anyone watched the 20/20 interview last Tuesday night, you got to see 2 interviews with Sheen…the 2011 interview and a 1999 interview he did with ABC just out of rehab.  It was remarkable the different in demeanor and coherence.  It was like I was watching 2 completely different people….but I wasn’t.  In 1999, Sheen came across as cogent and genuinely remorseful.   In 2011, he came across as delusional and almost manic.   If you ever want to show your children what drugs can do to you, show them these 2 interviews.  That is 12 years of drug and alcohol abuse with maybe a little psychological issues going on as well.  It’s sad to see.  And I worry about his kids.  Don’t get me started on that because I will be here until tomorrow going off about his children.

In all seriousness, I hope Charlie Sheen gets the help he so desperately needs.  Otherwise I worry that 5 years from now, the breaking news you are going to be hearing in regards to Charlie Sheen will be about his death instead of him being fired from a hit TV show!

Two and a Half Men Crew to be paid

Good news for the crew of Two and a Half Men.  Rumor has it they will be getting paid for the 4 missed episodes that have been canceled due to Charlie Sheen being, you know, crazy.

Hoping this information is true, I am so happy to hear that the crew will be taken care of considering the complete mess and joke this situation has become.  Charlie Sheen is a disaster and the fact that his decisions almost cost all these innocent people their livelihood was unspeakable.  So I am really glad to see the network do the right thing.

Two and A Half Men Shut Down for the rest of the season

Wow!   Charlie Sheen has managed to destroy the number 1 show on TV this season and yet doesn’t take any responsibility for it.  Does that really shock anyone?  Probably not.

This is such an amazing development and both parties are acting like idiotic high school boys.  Don’t get me wrong this is all Charlie Sheen’s doing.  But does Chuck Lorre really need to stoke the fires with his vanity cards?  Probably not necessary knowing what a fragile mental state Sheen is in.  Well in an interview today, when Sheen was asked about it, he went off and ripped Lorre making comments like the following:

“I embarrassed him in front of his children and the world, by healing at a pace that his unevolved mind cannot process.  Last I checked, Chaim, I’ve spent close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold, and the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write. Clearly someone who believes he’s above the law.”

Um, ok.  So much for being the bigger person.  As a result of Sheen’s lovely interview, the following statement was released from TPTB at CBS:

“Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season.”

And if that wasn’t enough, after the announcement about production being shut down, Sheen released a letter to

“What does this say about Haim Levine [Chuck Lorre] after he tried to use his words to judge and attempt to degrade me. I gracefully ignored this folly for 177 shows … I fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can’t handle my power and can’t handle the truth. I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels especially if they wind up in my octagon. Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words — imagine what I would have done with my fire breathing fists. I urge all my beautiful and loyal fans who embraced this show for almost a decade to walk with me side-by-side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong.

Remember these are my people … not yours…we will continue on together…”

Charlie Sheen

Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up!!!!  Stay tuned.

UPDATE: When I wrote this, I had yet to see this gem of a quote from the Alex Jones interview:

“I was told if I went on the attack they would cancel the show, so I’m seeing if they’re telling the truth,”

What an asshole.  So because of his ego, he is going to risk the livelihood of the rest of the cast and crew so he can prove a point?  Is he serious?  There have already been some stories about how the crew is furious with him because when the show isn’t going, these guys don’t get paid.  So when Sheen goes to rehab and the show is put on hiatus for his douchey ways, the crew doesn’t get paid.  Way to go Charlie!  And now because Chuck Lorre has become his enemy (how that started I have no idea) he will risk everyone’s jobs to push some buttons.   Why?   Because he’s a narcissistic ass!!!

This has to be unprecedented in TV that the #1 comedy show could be canceled because its lead actor is a buffoon.  I would rather them either recast the role or get rid of Charlie Sheen’s character somehow and bring on someone else before they cancel the show.   And if it doesn’t work out, then cancel it.  But the rest of the cast and crew shouldn’t be penalized because Sheen is a nut job.   What a complete and utter mess this has become!

Two and a Half Men’s Charlie Sheen Enters Rehab…Finally

Numerous media outlets are reporting that Two and a Half Men is going on Hiatus until further notice due to Charlie Sheen entering rehab in an undisclosed location earlier today.    Two and a Half Men show runner Chuck Lorre confirmed that the show is supporting Sheen’s entrance into rehab and will go on production hiatus effective immediately.

What does this mean for the show?  Who the hell knows.  If this were a show like Outsourced or $%#! My Dad Says, there is no way the network would put up with it and the show would just be pulled.   But when you are the #1 comedy not only on your network but on all of network TV, you get a little latitude.   So I have no doubt that after this rehab stint, Two and a Half Men will be back.  I doubt it will be back on this year but it should be back next season barring any MAJOR developments.

This could be good news for a show like $%#! My Dad Says.   Usually CBS drops it’s worse performing comedy every year, which would be that God awful show.  But if things with TAAHM get worse and if something should happen where it can’t come back right away. $%#! is performing well enough, that CBS could keep it around for another season as a just in case.

The saga continues so stay tuned!!
