2014/2015 Renew/Cancel Tracker
I figured I would put this in an easier spot for people to find so hopefully this will be easier for you to access and see updates. Also keep in mind, these are network shows only. There are too many cable shows to also track so this will just be for the network shows. But as other cable shows get renewed or canceled, I will post that on the main blog page.
For some shows, the writing is on the wall and you can tell when the party’s over. Other shows are plugging right along so there really is no room for question or doubt about their broadcast future. Then there are those shows in the middle lovingly referred to as “Bubble Shows.” Bubble shows are shows that could go either way and are probably the hardest to predict. Their fate lies in the hands of many different things and it’s different each time…ratings, sometimes (although very rarely) fan campaigns to save them, advertisers, the fate of other shows on their networks, a network’s unique renewal history (CBS typically cancels their lowest rated comedy even if it is doing decently), or a #1 show’s star completely going crazy and possibly canceling said show making room for a bubble show. As of today, January 25th 2015, here is a quick breakout of where we stand with the definite renewals and cancellations:

But there are certain shows which are leading towards cancellation and certain shows leaning towards renewals. The following are examples of “relatively easy to predict fates”:

Any show that you don’t see on here they are the bubble shows. Some may be closer to cancellation and some may be closer to renewal. But they certainly haven’t been canceled or renewed yet and they are too close to call to guess what will happen.

I think that The Event will be renewed and here’s why. All of the ratings are consistenly going up. The Nielsen ratings are the only ones struggling and they are going up too (have you seen the DVR ratings for it?). The iTunes ratings are way higher than the first part of the season, the podcast ratings are also above where they’ve been before. Even Facebook and Twitter are showing this too. If the show has a little bit more time to grow, it will be the next Lost. What do you think of this?

You do raise 100% valid points. The only problem is there is only one source that the advertisers pay attention to….Nielsen. And the advertising dollars are what determines what stays on the air unfortunately.
This is something network TV will have to figure out with the advent of different ways to watch TV like DVRs, Internet, and iTunes. I know sooooo many people who don’t watch shows live but watch them either the next day online or on their DVR over the weekend. The other problem with this (and this is why the advertisers don’t put much stock in DVR, online or iTunes viewing) is because what do you do when you watch a show via your DVR? You FF through the commercials! On line and iTunes are shown with limited commercials. You may only get one or two per break where live you would get 4-5 per break. Advertisers certainly don’t want to hear that.
It’s a huge problem. The networks will only keep shows that do well in the hot targeted demos that advertisers like so that the advertisers spend their money with their network. That’s why if Nielsen ratings for your favorite show are struggling, your favorite show is in trouble. It sucks. But it’s true.

Jacob raises a good point. I think too many people are still going by what the Nielsen ratings are and they are failing to take into account DVR and iTunes (etc). More and more people are turning to DVR for watching their favorite shows, and I think that is going to become a very large factor in whether or not a show on the bubble will get renewed. A show may have a lower rating for what used to be considered normal viewing, but if it balances out with DVR viewings, I think that’s ample enough reason to renew. If both of those ratings are down, well then obviously you have to cut your losses.
The thing that irks me, are a lot of the shows that people rant and rave about, are really so overdone that I personally can’t stand watching. These are those formulaic shows such as House…I mean really? If the pilot episode were in any real hospital (let alone any of the following ludicrous situations and seasons) House would have been sued out of existence. It’s one thing to stretch the truth a little bit and make things a little intense, but when you do it in such a predictable manner it gets pretty old.
It will be interesting to see which of the bubble shows get renewed…

Hi Jason,
I hear what you and Jacob are saying about DVR and iTunes but as I mentioned to him above, advertisers don’t care about DVR and iTunes viewing either due to limited to no commercials or having the ability to FF through a 30 second spot that possibly cost them a few hundred thousand dollars. And advertising revenue is what keeps shows on the air. And what drives advertising revenue? Nielsen ratings. And that is it.
Not to get too technical but here’s how the rating system works…there are 3 types of ratings:
C+3 commercial ratings: these are the ratings that determine what the networks can charge clients for advertising. These are never published to the TV viewers. These ratings measure LIVE and DVR average commercial minutes of a show within 3 days of the original airdate.
Live + Same Day ratings: these are the ratings we see posted all over TV sites because these are the closest you are going to get to the C+3 numbers the networks and advertisers get. This measures LIVE and DVR until 3 am after the original airtime and measures the entire show (including the commercials.)
Live + 7 Day ratings: this measures LIVE and DVR within 7 days of the original airtime and measures the entire show (including the commercials.)
So there you have it. The horrible, crappy truth about our favorite shows. It doesn’t matter if you watch your show 20xs on DVR. It doesn’t matter to the chances of your show’s renewal if you haven’t watched it within 3 days and you didn’t watch the commercials. That’s the ugly truth. And it sucks.
That’s why there needs to be a better system. I’m not sure what that is, but it does need to be fixed. Or too many excellent shows are going to keep getting dumped because their fans watch it at the wrong time and on the wrong form of media!

If you don’t see a show listed, it is on the bubble. Chuck and Human Target are both firm bubble shows and we may not hear anything about either show until the network upfronts in a few weeks.
But keep checking back and if I hear any news, I will post it here!!!

CSI NY showed up as renewed, but heard CSI (Vegas) moving to a 10 pm Wed slot after Criminal Minds. That last CSI NY ep finished up like they planned on being cancelled. It was an excellent last couple of minutes of TV and it had “BYE!” all over it. I thought for sure it was a goner and whomever edited it did also. I also saw Rules Of Engagement was sent to Saturday…burning off eps already done or legitimately renewed? (did not see it on your list)
Hear anything on that?

Rules of Engagement was renewed for a 6th season and moved to Saturday night. That can’t be a good sign. Although it is coming back in the fall vs. the spring like it had been. It wouldn’t shock me if this was it’s last season but you never know!

I’m wondering about the summer season. Unlike you I can’t seem to find out any info on my shows. Haven, The Glades, Rizzoli and Isles, Covert Affairs, Warehouse 13, Royal Pains, Persons Unknown, Combat Hospital, Flashpoint, and Murdoch Mysteries. I think that’s about it.
